It spent four years in production, and was thought to be Vaporware for a while, before it was released to extremely positive reviews. The first game released by Lionhead Studios in 2004.

I honestly wish I was just able to pay $60 for a single-player, Molyneux-free Fable 4, but I won’t write off Fable Legends before I see what it’s trying to do either.įollow me on Twitter, like my page on Facebook, and pick up a copy of my sci-fi novel, The Last Exodus, and its sequel, The Exiled Earthborn, along with my new Forbes book, Fanboy Wars.A video game series created by Peter Molyneux. But again, it’s good it’s at least trying to emulate those games rather than say, citing Clash of Clans as its F2P role model. Despite what you may think of the genre, F2P is a pretty big risk from a profitability perspective, and Fable Legends is going to have to work damn hard to “earn” your dollars the same way League of Legends and Hearthstone do. I think it is a novel idea to release a pretty major console title as F2P, as just having “Fable” and “Xbox One” in the same sentence is something that probably could have extracted $60 from many wallets. Lionshead might finally know what to do with the series now that he’s out of the picture.

Fable is now free from Peter Molyneux which has to count for something. With all this said, I don’t want to be a total pessimist either. The last time we saw Fable, it has morphed into a weird, on-the-rails shooter for Fable: The Journey, and now it’s 4v1 F2P multiplayer? It’s taking some very strange turns. I’d argue even the best game in the series, Fable 2, was still rife with flaws, and its creator spent half his time bashing his own series. I’m picturing Titanfalll/Brink-style story missions where you play multiplayer matches with audio narration and maybe an extra cutscene or two and call it a “campaign.”Īnd lastly, it’s hard to deny that Fable as an IP has been dragged through the mud since its birth. I’m also wondering how on earth a Telltale-style story will weave its way into a multiplayer-only game in any way that makes sense. Evolve may have a lot of this going for it, but the rigid nature of this kind of 4v1 gameplay hasn’t allowed for much creativity, and I already see loads of players getting bored with the game, even after just a week or two. For every great F2P game out there, there are probably a hundred terrible ones, and it’s incredibly hard to get the formula right, no matter who you say you’re trying to emulate.Ĥv1 multiplayer is a new concept that’s still something of an unknown to players. Obviously, it’s easy to be skeptical about all of this. He’s felt the same about Team Fortress and League of Legends, and the idea is clearly to get players to feel that way about Fable Legends. Game Director David Eckelberry goes on to take a direct shot at rival F2P title World of Tanks, calling it pay-to-win, and details how he recently spent so much time playing Hearthstone that he wanted to give Blizzard money because he felt as if he owed them, so he bought some packs.
